Evaluation Wig Wanderland

I was really excited for this project because I feel I have always been interested in hair and learning new techniques, I feel like my skills have improve as I have constantly been having to really think about the styles I am creating, not being able to create it directly onto the models head I have has to think about the process of developing the design so it will work with not only a wig but a synthetic wig. I have had to be organised due to setting the wig 3 days prior to styling as no heat products could be used on the synethic wigs, I couldn’t think of a design and just go with it onto the models hair I had to really think about every single element within that design and how id actually achieve this. I have really enjoyed the fact we have been able to create three designs because I feel like its given me an insight into how id actually work in industry constantly changing a wig to a different style or adapting a wig for a new model. I have learnt a lot about hair in general and how really working with the models head and face shapes. Towards the end my designs were more successful as I was really looking at the models face and what actually suited her, adapting a style I had to that actually person I have learnt is very important.

The design I was most please with was my moderate I feel that whole idea of the concept was portrayed well, all the elements I feel worked very well together for example the shape with the hair lace with the contrasted textures, on the actual model. Least successful was my Extreme a lot of elements within the design I would change such as the shape and positioning of hair, this was partly due to the fact I didn’t pre style the wig making it on the day on the models head. I was partly please this didn’t go to plan as I feel its really taught me I need to think carefully about my designs and how they will work in reality, I feel a lot of the techniques I’ve learnt I can project onto other future hair designs.

Not only have I enjoyed the practical side learning a lot of new skills vie really enjoyed the design process I like that its been aimed towards a fashion editorial shoot we have really been given our own space and time no boundaries. Our design’s project a personal preference within hair that is was I have enjoyed the whole design process not only creating aesthetical pleasing styles but styles that each element means something its done for a reason this is shown throughout my research. I have also not taken inspiration from other hair designs these three hairstyles are original each element is something through the design process I have created reason behind it.

When I look at the final images and final magazine spreads I created you can tell it’s a personal thing that is what makes me proud of my final images. Although if I were to re do them (something I would love to do in the future) and develop them more I would change many elements on a lot of the designs not just the extreme which I feel was not successful id adapt them and develop them and really build on the design.

In the time we had I feel my images are a working block and I feel through my images from the extreme to the simple I have already progressed so much within those weeks setting at the begin I was very unconfident and didn’t enjoyed rollers as id find myself getting stressed and you can see that within my extreme image but in comparison to my simple wig I really enjoyed the setting process and the accomplishment when the set turned out perfectly, I felt I could see my progression through the unit in both my design and my technical skills.

Pin Up Stylised Fashion Editorial Magazine

I wanted to explore ways in witch i would want my images to be featured within a fashion editorial i began researching and looking at magazines around the house and online. I came across this website- http://www.scout-holiday.com/blog/?p=1911 i love the way the images are laid out on the pages it creates an intimate feel something i want my images to have as the Pin Up culture context feature a women in her lingerie exposing a provocative side to this strong women who is timeless to society yet is the picture of beauty, strength and power. Polaroid's are a current and vintage way of keeping photo's this could suggest the images were taken yesterday or in the 40's.

Fashion Editorial Pin Up Girl  - Simple, Moderate, Extreme.

Simple Final Shoot

I was very pleased with the set on my wig previous to styling i was worried the hair wouldn't hold into the rolls i had steamed them into, when styling on the day of the shoot i found that they had set very well i added a smoothing serum to the hair to get the extra shine using sections clips to hold the style in place more until shooting. I wasn't too sure about the hair lace before shooting although within these images i do feel it adds to the style successfully as it mirrors the finger wave style. This style was the style i enjoyed the most creating, i enjoyed creating the set as perviously i struggled using the rollers i feel the more i have done them through the extreme, moderate and simple styles i have become more confident and this shows within this shoot. I felt i achieved the provocative very feminine relaxed look within the shoot and am pleased with the final images.

I further added some images taken on my phone of the set without the hair lace when looking back at these images i wish i would have taken some photos in the studio without the hair lace as a reference to the finger wave set.

Simple Styling & Makeup

The concept for this shoot is that my pin up girl is in her bedroom reading all her fan mail i want the images to portray that classic cheeky pin up girl style seen in many of the original illustrations while keeping to my ideas of the new pin up girls that strong and powerful portrayed through the extreme oversizing of the finger waves style.
Again i was to use the colour to complement the hair tones, i want the look to be fresh, bronzed and peachy. I love the images below i like the freshness of the colour tones within the lips and cheeks. Although i would like to create more of a smokey brown tone eye to give that provocative look to the overall style.

Johns, M. (no date a) Pin Up Shoot Styling & Makeup. Pin Up Shoot Styling & Makeup. Available at: http://uk.pinterest.com/milliejohns/pin-up-shoot-styling-makeup/ (Accessed: 2 December 2014).

Styling as she is in her bedroom i want her to be in lingerie with a dressing gown over the top of a bra keeping it cheeky but provocative at the same time. I have selected some lingerie and outfit option as shown below i love the floral bra let and feel the colours will mirror the colours in the makeup and hair i further like the comono with the floral print also in this colour i will test on the day weather this distracts from the hair style.

Simple Process of creation

I wanted the colour of this last style to look very pretty unlike the other two i wanted to make more of a statement with the colour such as using a bright blue or dark purple. I want to keep the colours feminine when looking at original pin up images i love the orange hair tones in some of the original models i began researching this colour tone and began to come across this peach tone i love the femininity of the colour and feel against the black this will work successfully.

Johns, M. (no date b) Pintrest. Available at: http://uk.pinterest.com/milliejohns/pin-up/ (Accessed: 2 December 2014).

I took some images of the wig in the set and sections clips pervious to final styling.

Simple Hair Charts & Instructions

Setting & Rollers
Roller & Steam 2/3 days prior to styling

Step 1: Part the wig from the left hand side to right creating a deep side parting, then part the sides from the back sectioning from about were the back of the ear would sit.

Step 2: Using the plastic rollers begin on the sides rolling away from the head under towards the head, repeat this as shown in the direction of the diagram. Pin into place. At the back roller down wards using brick word rolling to make sure the sections don't sit to leave gaps.

Step 3: Steam the overall style thoroughly and leave in a warm place to dry.

 Sections & Preparation

Step 1: Section around the front of the head about 2 inches in from about middle of the ear and pin this out of the way. (This will then be curled as shown in the chart above mirroring the rolling done onto the wig/ this should be done before makeup to leave time for the hair to cool and set)

Step 2: With the rest of the back section french plait tightly around into the centre of the back of the head and pin into place making sure that all parts of the hair are securely into place, apply wig cap and pin this onto the head using the plait as an anchor point pinning horizontally into the cap.

Hair Style

Wig: (Previous to on model's head)
Step 1: Taking out the rollers brush the hair and manipulate into the finger wave style by pushing up and brushing into the directions- when the style is complete apply sections clips to clip into place while styling & doing makeup.

Step 2: Apply wig onto the models head behind the models hair line and pin in using bun pins and create anchor point pining horizontaly across the head. Taking the hair lace pin this into place using bobbie pins, manipulating this to mirror the finger wave.

Models Hair:
Step 1: Taking out the curls previously set, brush these through when the wig is applied onto the head brush this into the wig hair and create a seamless finger wave style.

Step 2: Hair spray to finish.

Moderate Final Shoot

I was pleased with the final outcome of this design i was a lot more confident with the design than my extreme and i feel this shows within the final images. I felt the transition with the hair and makeup complimented one another. The models own hair worked well within my design, my favourite part of was the transition from the slick pulled back section of the models hair and wig contrasting with the line of the front curl i felt this shape was very successful. I liked the over all look and feel that she looked like a princess an atmosphere that portrays the Pin Up girl i wanted to portray the ideal of beauty and interwinding that provocative nature of the Pin Up culture in a feminine way. I felt that the page boy style could have been more successful by allowing the hair to come around to the front for the face on images as this couldn't be achieved by the padding within the style although i love the effect of the side on images feature this page boy style at the back. I am pleased with my final images and feel that if i were to style this again i would have only changed minimal parts such as the movement within the hair although for a fashion shoot this worked.

Other Images Playing around with styling, when taking the images Lottie felt that the T-shirt distracted from the shape at the back we have to slide the T-shirt up to the model's neck i loved the effect of the hair on a nude back, although was very annoyed when i tried to take images from the side as the T-shirt showed. I felt that if i were to re do this shoot i would have had the model wearing a dress although i thought the T shirt would look classic i feel its too casual and distracts from the hair.
