Knotting & Wig making

Wig making uses a technique called knotting using extension hair usually in different shades to create a really natural look and threading it through a foundation which is fine lace this can come in different deniers, there now is HD lace that is used for HD films. The wig is build upon a wig block that the wig is created on. Hair charts are further used to create the wig which are drawn for the direction of the hair, photographs are taken of the models natural hair line and direction of the hair to create a realistic shape.

To beging to create the wig you need to create a mould:

Step 1: Spray the hair line with water and comb back into place.
Step 2: Take clean film and place over the head, pulling taught get someone to help hold the clean film in place.
Step 3: Start Sellotaping the hair line over and over until the whole surface is covered, including the side burns and around the ears .
Step 4: take the permanent marker pen and draw on all the information you can from the hair and head to create the hair line. Draw on the name of the model to refer to.
Step 5: Sellotape over all the permanent marker pen to stop it transferring onto the lace.
Step 6: transfer this to the block and sellotape again into place make sure the hair line sits as flat as possible

Creating the lace over lay:
The lace has horizontal lines the lines with create and be used for different parts of the head creating different horizontal and vertical sections. The front hair line is always horizontal and the knotting determines the direction the hair will sit.

Step 1: Place the lace over the mould pin it onto the block half way over the hair line. Pin from middle to side to side to create a firm structure.
Step 2: pleat the lace so that the over all structure sits flat on the block and pin into place.

Knotting:

Create a loop with the extension dipping it into water makes the hair easier to handle holding this in the left and the needle in the right thread the needle through a hole of lace catching a stand of hair thread this back through the hole, flick the needle across bring over the stand and pull through to create a knot and repeat.
